Looking at the street style scene, denim shirts are everywhere — whether with a Hermès Kelly bag on the streets of Paris, layered in Copenhagen or with leather pants in Milan.

A foolproof place to start? A denim shirt and jeans. From there, just add a trench coat or leather jacket. On the other hand, by combining the shirt with an A-line skirt or leather pants, the whole image is automatically more elegant.

We envy those who pull double duty with denim, which, when done right, can look super cool. However, some people hesitate with a head-to-toe denim outfit, and that can be a fair concern.

If you are not sure? Do not do it. There are many ways you can wear a denim shirt without having to wear it with jeans.

JCrew creative director Olympia Gayot rolls up the sleeves of her oversized denim shirt and pairs it with blue pleated pants, a great alternative to jeans. If you don’t want to wear blue with blue, but you love denim, wear a denim shirt with straight white jeans, inspired by the 1970s.

Wear a white top under an open denim shirt if you end up choosing a denim top and pants. Then she added a jacket and boots from the same color family like brown and gray.

Alternatively, choose a skirt and add a pair of shiny heels. You get extra points if the skirt is denim and A-line.
