Anne Hathaway, 41, opened up about her arduous path to becoming a mother in an interview with Vanity Fair.
The actress, who is mother to Jonathan, 8, and Jack, 4, revealed that she lost a pregnancy in 2015 and had to fight infertility.
In 2019, when she announced the pregnancy of her youngest child on social media, she wrote a message addressed to women who face difficulties getting pregnant.
“To everyone going through the hell of infertility and the struggle to conceive, please know that it wasn’t easy with either of my pregnancies. Sending extra love your way,” Anne wrote at the time.
In the interview with Vanity Fair, she broke down this message. “I went through a lot of pain trying to get pregnant,” she reported. “It would be hypocritical to post a pregnant photo pretending everything was wonderful when the story was much more difficult than that,” she said.
The actress then revealed that, in 2015, she had a miscarriage. At the time, she was playing in New York with the play “Grounded”, in which she performed a birth scene.
“The first time, it didn’t work out for me. I was doing a play and I had to give birth on stage every night. It was very difficult to hide it from people while I was there on stage pretending everything was fine”, she recalls.
“When I finally managed to get pregnant, to be on the other side, I wanted to tell other women that. ‘You don’t always have to be graceful. I see you and I’m with you,'” she said.
“It’s very difficult to want something so much and wonder what you’re doing wrong,” said Anne, who has been married to actor Adam Shulman since 2012.
