‘We played for a case of beer’, says Beto Jamaica about the beginning of É O Tchan

The only Bahian music attraction on a country cruise at sea in Angra dos Reis, É O Tchan put on the most exciting show on Friday night (29).

Led by Beto Jamaica and Compadre Washington, the group didn’t invent anything when it came to choosing their repertoire and had one hit after another.

Simple and accurate recipe that the duo will repeat this Saturday (30) inside the home of BBB 24, on Globo. In addition to the duo, Sheila Mello, Scheila Carvalho and Jacaré complete the band.

In conversation with F5Jamaica and Comprade spoke about the band’s success over a 30-year career and across generations.

How do you explain the success of É O Tchan? Do you have any recipes?

Beto Jamaica: There is no recipe or secret: We managed to do something without pretension, you know, to be successful, to reach the biggest stages in life because we played in houses, at baptisms, on birthdays, you know, in people’s homes .

Sometimes we even played for a case of beer, because people didn’t value our work. But we conquered our space with great humility.

And how was that?

Comprade Washington: We already had a great audience in Salvador and suddenly it exploded. Suddenly… God’s thing and there goes 30 years of this happiness and being embraced by several generations.

Are you still surprised by the public’s reception?

Comprade Washington: Always (laughs). Success is good, but staying is even better and difficult…

Beto Jamaica: You said something right, success is good, now staying successful is difficult. Very difficult. We have always worked towards this.

It was not a job to be discarded. We created a sound, a musicality to be able to expand to Brazil and expand around the world.

So much so that we stayed with Segure o Tchan in first place for eight months. So that says it all. There are 16 million CDs sold in Brazil alone and 3 million abroad.

Your participation in BBB 24 soon is one of the most talked about topics on the networks. Are you preparing something special?

Comprade Washington: Let’s celebrate 30 years of É O Tchan with Sheila Mello, Scheila Carvalho, Jacaré, me and Beto. It’s going to be a great show with all of our repertoire.
