Patriarchy, Matriarchy, #MeToo, 50/50, Cancel Culture and Greek Cinema: The five-day film tribute to the Small Stage of the Roof opens the discussion around the imprint of an entire era.
A collaboration between the Hellenic Film Academy and the Roof of the Onassis Foundation, in the context of the action “Cinema, Open”.
How did Greek cinema capture eras that passed (passed?)? How did he prophesy an age that is changing (changing?)? How did Greek cinema negotiate terms and concepts that cause dynamic changes in the public sphere and redefine long-established perceptions? “Cinema, Open”, the joint series of actions of the Hellenic Film Academy and the Roof of the Onassis Foundation, continues for the second year, presenting this year the five-day film tribute “Zeta, Floretta, Niki”.
The three actors of the film “Amok“, the Zeta Apostolouthe Floretta Zanna and the Niki Triantaphyllidiswho at the time of the film’s release and later received critical comments and shots against their dignity for their participation, gave their names to the title of the tribute – a minimal act of public redress, love and rupture with any type of slut-shaming.
The tribute screens 14 emblematic, popular and hard-to-find films from the rich heritage of Greek cinema until 2009.
These are films that talk about its themes gender and capture versions of it violence stylized and exposed to the full light by the #metoo movement, films that meet forms of patriarchy but also matriarchy, bizarre, painful, wild and, in some cases, funny, films that not only ask about Cancel Culture, but also shed light on the issue of 50/50, ie the under-representation of women in cinema.
The screenings connect the then with the now and open the discussion on the critical and topical issues of the time.
The multiple faces of a woman shortly before her death, in “Topo” by Antoinette Angelidis (1985).
Men and women next door, trapped and trapped, in “Order” by Pavlos Tassios (1980).
Money, family and social classes exert violence on a person, in “The Price of Love” by Tonia Marketaki (1984).
Love, death and black humor, in “Singapore Sling” (1990), the ultimate scandal film by Nikos Nikolaidis.
The portrait of a trans woman, forty years before the recognition of gender identity, in “Betty” by Dimitris Stavrakas (1979).
A family that sails happily and irrationally, diverting, validating and overturning again pervasive moral and stereotypical perceptions, in the film “A Crazy Crazy Family” by Dinos Dimopoulos (1965).
Love as a reaction to a world in ankylosis, in “Evdokia” by Alexis Damianos (1971).
A father, master of his children, sets deadly traps in the movie “Caution Danger!” by George Stampoulopoulos (1983).
The Greek petty bourgeois family ready to catch fire, in “Spirtokouto” by Giannis Economidis (2003).
Unusually high intensity in the depiction of gender and roles in a bourgeois family, in “Absences” by George Katakouzinos (1987).
Two sisters faced with their passions and loneliness, in the film “Roads of Love are Night” by Frida Liappa (1981), one of the most important directors of the 80’s, who a few years later, saw her whole course to canceled out by the yellow barbarism of television windows.
An Agent Against the Rules, in Athena Rachel Tsangari’s “Constant Departure of Petra Going” (2000).
A relationship open to multiple interpretations and an depiction of the 80’s, which converses dynamically with the present, in “The Beekeeper” by Theodoros Angelopoulos (1986).
Horror, sexual violence, wild heroes and wild heroines under the hot sun, in “Amok” by Dinos Dimopoulos (1963).
The films are prefaced by filmmakers and filmmakers, film critics and journalists. Along with the films, when the spectators enter STEGI, fragments from films that participated in the Iris Awards, from 2009 until today, are shown on the screens of the foyer: scenes, shots, dialogue pieces and images of contemporary voices of Greek cinema, which mirror, complement or subvert the films that will be shown on the Small Stage and the themes of the tribute, converse with them in a live dialogue or be inspired by them.
