The Cuban actress, in addition to the recognition she received playing characters like Marilyn Monroe, has taken on roles in action films alongside Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling.
2024 will be a year of rest for her Ana de Armas, the actress who turned 36 a few days ago and is going through one of the best moments of her career. While for some actors a year without releases can be a bad sign, in her case it seems understandable after almost a decade in Hollywood, where she arrived after another 10 years of acting in Cuba (where she was born) and Spain.
During this time, the actress developed into a versatile talent, mainly in dramas and thrillers, working alongside well-known actors such as Keanu Reeves (in Knock, Knock, her English-language debut), Miles Teller and Jonah Hill (in War Dogs ), and established directors such as Denis Villeneuve (in Blade Runner 2049), and Rian Johnson (in Knives Out), which put her on the path to an Oscar nomination after working with Andrew Dominik on the controversial film ‘Blonde ”, inspired by the life of Marilyn Monroe. However, the actress has not stuck to these types of roles and has tried to branch out into action roles, similar to other performers like Scarlett Johansson, Charlize Theron and even Cate Blanchett.
The man who saw the potential of Ana de Armas as an action star was the Cary Joji Fukunagadirector of the most recent sequel to the James Bond series, “No Time To Die”. In an interview with Variety, the actress revealed that the director approached her about offering her the role in the film starring Daniel Craig.
However, she was hesitant to accept straight away as she was not expecting a classic ‘Bond girl’ role, who are now viewed negatively due to the way she portrayed women in the franchise. “I told Cary I wouldn’t just say yes because it’s about Bond and I kind of pushed him to write something to show me.”
This role catapulted the actress to the height of her fame (so far). THEwhen she was nominated for an Oscar for her work in the 2022 film, inspired by the life of movie star Marilyn Monroe, “Blonde”, directed by the acclaimed Andrew Dominick. The job was not easy, especially since the actress had to play such a recognizable American character while also having a strong Cuban accent. After working on it and getting deeper into the character, he managed to embody her, convincing the critics. Although the film received mixed reviews for its portrayal of Monroe’s life, her performance was applauded and it appeared that it would not be the first time she received such an honor (Michelle Yeoh received the award during the ceremony ).
That same year, De Armas landed her first action role after No Time To Die. It was in the thriller “The Gray Man”, directed by the Russo brothers. The action scenes received good reviews, as did the work of the three leads, however for many the film was not memorable in terms of plot or subject matter. It seems that action films are not a good ground for the actress. Her next foray into action films was the “Ghosted”an original film that received many negative reviews.
The premise was promising: an action/comedy/romance type “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”, starring two of the best-known actors of the time (again appearing alongside Chris Evans). However, reviews noted that there was no chemistry between Evans and De Armas and that the film was “soulless”, even using the word “repulsive” to describe it.
“After Bond, there was a wave of these kinds of action roles and it was fun. I chose the ones I found most exciting or were with people I wanted to work with.”he told “Vanity Fair.”
“Ballerina” is the highly anticipated film that will be part of his franchise John Wick, in which she will play a woman seeking revenge on her family’s killers. The film will be released in 2025, in time to relaunch the actress’ career, and will reunite her with Keanu Reeves, who will return to the role of the professional killer in the film, about which little has been said so far…
