Recall that some time ago, Shakira reached an agreement with prosecutors regarding alleged unpaid taxes from 2012 to 2014
Shakira seems to have achieved a great victory in one second investigation related to her taxes in Spain. The celebrated artist, 47, was accused of owing Spain 6.7 million euros in taxes on her 2018 earnings through an offshore company, although she has denied any wrongdoing.
On Wednesday, May 8, 2024, prosecutors moved to dismiss the star’s second tax evasion case, saying there was insufficient evidence, according to an AP report.
Recall that some time ago, Shakira reached a plea deal with prosecutors regarding alleged unpaid taxes from 2012 to 2014. She was given a three-year suspended prison sentence and fined approximately $7.6 million. dollars.
Spanish prosecutors in July 2023 opened a second case against the singer, accusing her of using a network of companies, some based in tax havens, to defraud the Spanish tax authorities in 2018. Shakira paid the court in August, the agency that represents her told AFP, confirming a report by the newspaper “El Periodico”.
Her payment does not indicate either the singer’s guilt or innocence in the case, but is “further proof of her willingness to pay off potential debts to the Spanish tax authorities,” the paper said.

Officials confirmed in July that Shakira was being investigated for suspected tax violations dating back to 2018. A spokesman for the High Court of Catalonia said at the time: “The court opened proceedings following a complaint filed by prosecutors against the singer for two suspected tax offenses related to income tax and property tax for the Spanish tax year 2018.”
Shakira said after admitting tax fraud for the years 2012 to 2014 in a Barcelona court that she did it for her career and her two sons, Milan and Sasha.
In a lengthy statement issued through its public relations representatives, it said: “I have to pick my battles and the most important thing for me right now is that my children live a full life and I focus on what’s really important: watching them grow up and spending time with them, without I put them through the agony of seeing their mother in a lawsuit with the damage it causes. They themselves asked me to do this and I made this decision for them.”

And he added: “Difficult times have passed and I want them to finally see me happy and we can all look to the future together.”
Taking a stab at the Spanish tax system, she said:I believe that the system in Spain needs to be revised for the benefit of its citizens. And I will continue to be an ally to make sure that happens.
There are many people who cannot afford to pay for good defense lawyers or even reach an out-of-court settlement and have seen their lives fall apart because of disagreements with the Spanish Ministry of Finance.”

Insisting that the fight to clear her name had caused her a huge waste of time and resources, she concluded: “I felt ready to face a trial and defend my innocence. My lawyers were convinced we had a winning case. However, I made this decision after a struggle that lasted many years.
I had two choices, to continue until the end, mortgaging my happiness and the happiness of my children, stop making songs and albums and touring, not being able to enjoy my career and the things I love, or take a deal and leave this chapter of my life behind me looking forward. I chose the second.”
