Jessica Biel opens up about her menstrual journey: ‘It’s not just natural, it’s extraordinary’

In a statement to the American magazine Time, Jessica Biel, 42, spoke about her journey of understanding her body and menstruation.

Star of the series “Candy”, Jessica opened up about jokes she heard from men as a child that referred to menstruation as something disgusting. “My blood boils when I hear these kinds of jokes now, but as a teenager, with the constant pressure to be nice, I would just let it go,” she says.

“Many of us, people who menstruate, still carry shame when we are menstruating. We hide our pads in the sleeve of our coat to walk to the bathroom. We don’t comment at all about what is happening in our bodies. It shouldn’t be like that,” says the actress .

“I’m interested in understanding more about menstruation and encouraging young people to ask more about it. Menstruation isn’t just natural: it’s extraordinary!”

The actress recalled her first period, at the age of eleven, on the day of the school play. “I thought I was dying when I saw blood in the toilet,” she reported. Jessica says her mother handed her a pad that “looked more like a diaper” and told her not to worry because “no one would notice.” “I was so excited for the play and suddenly I was terrified,” she recalls.

“We people who menstruate feel limited. What can I do when I’m on my period? Can I be active? Can I participate in the fun activities I always participate in? I wish I had known at that age that there was nothing to worry about. The play happened, Everything went well, I played my role and I was great”, she says.

“But I have to admit, more than 30 years later, I still feel like I have no control over this thing my body does.”

Jessica has been married to Justin Timberlake since 2012. The couple are parents of two boys. Today, she says that her relationship with menstruation has changed.

“After having two children, I feel like it’s more extreme than ever. I didn’t think I’d still have heavy periods after puberty, but here I am. I try to have a good relationship with my periods, but sometimes they’re moody,” she says.
