Christopher John Rogers was named American Fashion Designer of the Year 2021 at the CFDA Fashion Awards in New York.
Rogers, 27, who was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and won the 2019 American Fashion Designer Council and Vogue Fashion Foundation – CFDA / Vogue Fashion Fund Award, was nominated this year with Katherine Holstein Kharibe, Khaite, Marc Jacobs and Peter Doo.
Receiving the award from the host of the night Emily Blunt, Rogers said that he arrived in New York in 2016 and believed that “no one would hire him”. He thanked those who gave him the opportunity “all the amazing people who can understand what he is trying to do”.
Emily Adams Bond for Bode won the American Men’s Costume Designer of the Year award for 2021. In the same category were nominated Jerry Lorenzo for the brand Fear of God, Mike Amiri, Telfar Clemens (Telfar) .
Telfar Clemens was named American Accessory Designer of the Year and Edoph Thompson of Theophilio was named American Emerging Designer of the Year.
Demna Gvasalia of Balenciaga won the International Women’s Clothing Designer of the Year award and Wales Bonner’s Grace Wells Boehner was named International Men’s Clothing Designer of the Year.
The 2021 American Fashion Designer Council Awards Ceremony was held again in front of an audience at The Pool + The Grill at the Seagram Building on November 10
Some honorees were announced before the ceremony, such as Zendaya who was awarded the Fashion Idol for her global impact on fashion and Ania Taylor Joy who received the award in the new Face of the Year category.
The Geoffrey Beene Overall Offer Award went to Dapper Dan. The Haarlem-based designer is the first black creator to be honored with the award.
