One of the most imposing medieval buildings in Greece, a model of fortification art of that era, with a rich military history
The Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni visited Lefkada 2 days ago, on the one hand to represent the government, at the great celebration of the Ionian Islands, the anniversary of their Union with Greece, on May 21, 1864, and on the other hand to inaugurate the restoration and promotion of the castle Agia Mavra.
In the early hours of May 21, 1864, the people of the island had gathered around the fortress of Agia Mavra to see the English garrison leave, with the frigate “Magissa”, the English flag lowered and the Greek flag raised.
A copy of this flag was raised and waves, again, on the ramparts of the Castle.
The Castle is an emblematic and imposing monument, directly intertwined with the course of the island over time.
The restoration work took almost six years and was extremely demanding.
“The fact that the restoration of the Castle of Agia Mavra, as well as the Castle of Nafpaktos, were awarded by the international organization The Fortress Study Group, proves the quality of the restoration work. For the Ministry of the Interior it is a great moral satisfaction and a practical reward for all those who worked for the restoration of the monuments and are charged with their maintenance and protection” said Lina Mendoni.
The Castle of Agia Mavra is a Venetian fortress on the northeastern tip of the Greek island of Lefkada. The castle began as a small fortification around 1300 to control access to the island, before expanding to become a walled city and the island’s capital in the early 15th century.
The first fortress construction was completed in 1302 AD. by Giovanni Orsini, (Giovanni Orsini) when he took Lefkada as a dowry for his marriage with the daughter of the Despot of Epirus Nikephoros I’. A
It is considered one of the most imposing medieval buildings in Greece and is a model of fortification art of that era, possessing a rich war history, as it was besieged a total of 12 times in the 7 centuries of its existence.
For a long time the city of Lefkada was built around this castle, but later the Venetians moved it to its current location.
