Sean Penn arrives in Ukraine to film war documentary

by

American actor and director Sean Penn, 61, landed in Kiev on Thursday (24) to film the war in the region for a documentary by Vice. The information was released by the office of President Volodymyr Zelensky, according to Newsweek.

Since arriving in the country, Penn has spoken with President and Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk, local journalists and members of the Ukrainian military. The Ukrainian government expressed, in an official note, its gratitude to the actor for being in the region recording the war with Russia.

“The director specially came to Kiev to record all the events that are currently happening in Ukraine and to tell the world the truth about the Russian invasion of our country. Sean Penn is among those who support Ukraine today. Our country is grateful to him for this display of courage and honesty,” reads the government statement.

As Penn has just entered Kiev, videos posted on social media show thousands of Ukrainians trying to flee the capital and other cities as air strike sirens sound. The president declared martial law across the country and compared Russia to Nazi Germany for its offensive on Thursday.

Penn has been filming a documentary about the escalating tensions in the region for months. He flew back to Kiev earlier this week before Putin invaded the country and is in no hurry to leave, according to the Daily Mail.
