The National Opera Ballet travels to Egypt for the first time to present two unique performances at the Cairo Opera House. On June 6, 2024, “Dance with my shadow” will be presented, with music by Manos Hadjidakis and choreography by Constantinos Rigos. On June 7, 2024, the contemporary dance diptych titled “Return of the Summer” will be presented, with music by Giorgos Koumentakis and Hector Berlioz and choreography by Yiannis Mantafounis and Konstantinos Rigou. The tour is implemented with the support of the donation of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) to strengthen the artistic extroversion of the National Opera.

On June 6 at the Cairo Opera House, the National Opera Ballet will present “Dance with my Shadow”, a highly successful production which premiered at the Stavros Niarchos Hall in 2019. Three iconic works by the great Greek composer Manos Hadjidakis are choreographed by Director of the ELS Ballet, Konstantinos Rigos.

The cycle CNS – a work for baritone and piano in poetry by the composer, which was written about the death of the young Spaniard Etienne Rairich Moritz (1954) – symbolizes the abstract landscape of the “deserted beach”, the desolate land of death.

Captain Michalis – the music for the theatrical adaptation of the novel of the same name by Nikos Kazantzakis (1966) – symbolizes the Mediterranean, arid landscape, the wind falling amorously on the bodies, the form of the Kazantzakis man who is larger than life.

The Cursed Serpent – the two-piano ballet suite he wrote for Hellenic Chorodrama (1949) – is the land of shadows and fairy tale, where the old and the new co-exist in conflict.

“What is the Dance with my shadow? A dance with myself. A confession on stage of all that I have lived and that I carry inside me forever”, notes Konstantinos Rigos.

On June 7, the Ballet of the National Opera presents the contemporary dance diptych “Return of the Summer” at the Cairo Opera House, which consists of the choreographies “Point of No Return” and “Les Nuits d’été”.

In “Point of No Return”, the internationally recognized dancer and choreographer Yiannis Mantafounis composes a contemporary dance work with kinesiology elements deeply rooted in the tradition of classical dance. To the tune of the music of Giorgos Koumentakis, the dancers of the ELLS Ballet focus their performance on the transparency and authenticity of the movement through the prism of the classical steps.

In the choreography “Les Nuits d’été” Konstantinos Rigos choreographs Hector Berlioz’s song cycle, “Summer Nights”, one of the composer’s most popular works, and creates with the ELS Ballet a work about love, loneliness, the quest and the journey. Gestures and shapes create a kaleidoscope for the inner summer of each of us.
