“May” by Yannis Tsarouchis has fetched the highest sale price ever realized for his work at the world level: 475,542 euros
More than 150 auctions, through which more than 60,000 objects have been auctioned to date, with many of them significantly exceeding estimates, have been carried out by the VERGOS Auction House, as it announced on the occasion of its 35th anniversary, while all the renowned painters and sculptors have been represented with their works at the House’s auctions.
In particular, global and national sales price records have been achieved from time to time, such as for Giannis Tsarouchis, Konstantinos Parthenis, Takis, and Giannis Kounellis, highlighting the dynamics of the domestic secondary art market.
In more detail, as Andreas Vergos, managing director of the house, reports to APE/MPE, some of the highest records that have been set in recent years are:
– Yannis Tsarouchis (1910-1989), “May”: highest sale price ever realized worldwide for a work by Yannis Tsarouhis: 475,542 euros.
Held at the auction “New Greek Painting & Sculpture 19th & 20th century¬, Zappeio Megaro (06/1/2023).
The work belongs to a masterful series of 12 paintings created by the artist, one for each month of the year, drawing his inspiration from LouisPhilippe decorations with a gold background and 15th century French Crucifixion images.
– Konstantinos Parthenis (1878-1967), “The Apotheosis of Beauty” (1940): highest sale price for the Greek art market and among the 5 highest worldwide: 378,120 euros.
Held at the “Neo-Hellenic Painting and Sculpture, Historical and Philhellenic Objects” auction, Athens Cultural Center, (27/01/2021).
– Takis (1925-2019), work belonging to the “Signal” series: highest selling price globally: 190,300 euros.
Held at the “Neo-Hellenic Painting and Sculpture, Historical and Philhellenic Objects” auction, Polychoros of Culture Athens (17/06/2021).
– Yannis Kounellis (1936-2017), “Untitled” (2001): the highest price in Greece and 4th worldwide: 259,600 euros. Held at the auction “Neo-Hellenic Painting, Precious Jewels”, Zappeio Megaro (19/05/2019).
There are not a few cases where, on a domestic and international level, a work of art has gathered great interest and after many “hits» the sale price to be several times the original price.
For example, Andreas Vergos states:
“The rarity of the autograph famous poem “Che fece … … il gran refifuto” of Constantine Cavafy, attracted the keen interest of collectors from the start. With an initial estimate of €6,000, the autograph received 31 hits back from interested buyers, which naturally generated intense excitement and anticipation among the public watching the auction. The final sale price was set at 67,000 euros».
