The leadership award from the National Association of Broadcasters of the USA (NAB Leadership Foundation) was lost out of Robert De Niro’s hands, as a “punishment” because – just days before Trump’s guilty verdict – he had called the accused former president (and current Republican candidate) “clown,” at a Democratic rally outside the Manhattan courthouse.

De Niro’s statements were applauded by most, but also criticized by many.

A union spokesperson told The Hill that the awards show (next Tuesday in Washington) is “proudly bipartisan,” which is why the famed actor and founder of the Tribeca festival was barred from it

“While we strongly support the right of every American to exercise free speech and engage in civic engagement, it is clear that Mr. De Niro’s recent high-profile activities will create a distraction from the charitable work we hoped to recognize. In order to maintain the focus on serving the awardees, Mr. De Niro will no longer be attending the event,” the spokeswoman said.

De Niro’s over the top reaction

In a statement to the Hill, De Niro did not protest the decision and stated that continues to appreciate the team.

“I support the work of the NAB Leadership Foundation and would like to express my appreciation and gratitude for what the Foundation has done and will continue to do for the good of us all and I wish them well in their good work”the Oscar-winning star said.
