Actress Amanda Bynes, 35, has asked the US court to end her mother’s guardianship after nearly nine years, according to the website Page Six. Her defense filed a petition in the Superior Court of Ventura County, California, on Wednesday (23).
Bynes also filed a declaration of capacity on Tuesday, as California requires all guardianship cases to have up-to-date records on the mental state of a conservator, doctor, psychologist or religious healing practitioner. The hearing is scheduled for March 22.
David A. Esquibias, Bynes’ attorney, said in a statement to People: “Amanda wishes to end her guardianship. She believes her condition has improved and court protection is no longer needed.”
In September of last year, a report on Bynes’ health was filed and approved by a California court with the next update scheduled for January 2023. Contrary to reports at the time, Esquibias explained that his guardianship “was not extended” until 2023
Since August 2013, Bynes’ mother Lynn has had temporary custody of her daughter after she allegedly burned down a garage and was hospitalized in a psychiatric prison. As a result, she has legal control over her daughter’s personal, medical and financial affairs.
The actress published a post on Twitter in November 2014 saying she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, a month after a second hospitalization. In recent years, Bynes has been in and out of mental health facilities while battling addiction.
The actress announced in November 2018 that she had been sober for four years, but returned to treatment two months later, after what was reported as a “stress-related relapse”.
Bynes became known for films such as “She’s the Man” (2006) and “Hairspray” (2007). Her last big screen role was in “The Lie” (2010), as Marianne.
