Fernanda Montenegro, 94, attended the second day of open rehearsal of the show “Não me surrender, não”, starring Othon Bastos, 91, and the meeting of veterans moved those who followed the conversation, after the performance, at Teatro Vannucci, in Rio of January.

“We have almost 200 years together,” said the actress, while hugging her friend. She cried and praised the actor. “You never made mistakes. Your characters were always perfect.”

Fernanda also spoke about the importance of being in theater after decades of artistic career. She said that while the head works, the body follows.

“It’s almost 100 years of an intense life, of artistic survival”, she highlighted, mentioning the two trajectories. The actress recalled censorship during the military dictatorship and a proposal that emerged at the time to stop the theater as a form of protest.

She was against it. “If we stop, we won’t come back,” she said. “The most challenging act is that we don’t stop coming.”

The two made the film “Central do Brasil”, by Walter Salles, together. The character Dora, a retired teacher who writes letters to illiterate people, led Fernanda to compete for the Oscar for best actress. Othon played César, an evangelical truck driver with whom his wife falls in love.

“I Don’t Surrender, No” premieres on Friday (14) as a tribute to Othon for 91 years of age and 71 years of career. In the show, he remembers important events from his life.

Fernanda Montenegro celebrates her 80-year career with a dramatized reading of “A Cerimônia do Adeus”, by Simone de Beauvoir (1908-1986), at Teatro Raul Cortez, located at Sesc 14 Bis, in São Paulo.

Tickets for the season lasting about a month were up for grabs this Tuesday (11), when online sales began. Sesc’s ticket sales system crashed and most online tickets were sold out.

In the work, the French writer and philosopher narrates the last decade of her husband’s life, the philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-1980). “I rigorously organized this important work for two years,” said the actress. The first reading was in 2023, at the Brazilian Academy of Letters, where she occupies chair number 17.
