The famous actor hit rock bottom with “Waterworld” and is trying to come back. His latest effort is called ‘Horizon: An American Saga’
In the movie “The Big Chill” (1983), was intended to co-star Glenn Close and Kevin Kline, but ended up only appearing on screen for a few seconds. Just six years later, Mr Kevin Costner he was the biggest star in Hollywood and his name made every movie a hit.
The films ‘The Bodyguard’, ‘A Perfect World’, ‘JFK’ and ‘Dances with Wolves’ were repeat and huge hits. But that period ended with ‘Waterworld’ (1995), when audiences decided they didn’t want to see him drink his own urine… This monumental failure knocked him off the throne and he never regained his place .
So Costner went from the Oscars to the Razzies. The TV series “Yellowstone” – a kind of “Bridgerton” for middle-aged men – brought him back into the limelight. Now, as he approaches his 70th birthday, Costner is back behind the camera with “Horizon: An American Saga,” a new western saga. To finance the project, Costner mortgaged a plot of land he bought to build a family home. “When I started making movies they didn’t pay me anything, then they paid me a lot and now I have to pay”joked at the Cannes Film Festival, where the film—the first in a four-part epic—was met with lukewarm reviews.
Costner has a close relationship with westerns. He grew up in California, wandering around wherever his father’s work took him. He was a better athlete than student, excelling at basketball and baseball, and more than reading books he enjoyed writing poetry, singing in the choir, and going to the movies. He was about to enroll in business school, but decided it was time to have “a conversation” with himself.
“I had a real conversation with myself about what I wanted to do and if I just wanted to please other people. And it was at that moment that I really said to myself: “I’m interested in telling stories.”, he told Rolling Stone. A chance meeting on an airplane with the actor Richard Burton convinced him. Costner told Burton that he always wanted to be an actor, and his response dispelled his own doubts: “To be happy, we must fight for our dreams.”

And that’s exactly what he did. Costner packed his bags and moved to Hollywood. Before getting his first job as an actor, he was a tour guide, fisherman and truck driver. During one of these temporary jobs, he met a group of electricians, with whom he worked for a few days. To thank him for his efforts, he was offered a line of cocaine, he revealed on a podcast.
Costner did not have the spirit of a rebel, he grew up in a conservative environment and was always seen as such in Hollywood, although he supported Barack Obama and Pete Buttigieg, the first openly gay candidate for the nomination in the American presidential elections.
Hollywood awarded him seven Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director, for “Dances with Wolves”.
With the film industry at his feet, he could do whatever he wanted. And that’s exactly what he did: Locksley’s character Robin in the movie “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves” (1991) it was easy to imagine him wearing jeans and chewing gum. The film was nevertheless a success, perhaps due to the central track of its soundtrack: “(Everything I do) I do it for you” by Bryan Adams.

Costner also had success with the film “JFK” (1991). Oliver Stone’s film grossed over $200 million at the box office. But the film “The Bodyguard” (1992) made twice the income. People were dazzled by the actor and his co-star, Whitney Houston, while the film’s soundtrack remains the best-selling soundtrack in film history.
The actor’s divorce was “fodder” for tabloid magazines, as were its details. In 2023, after 18 years of marriage and three more children (he has seven children with three different women), he divorced Christine Baumgartner. Her exorbitant child support demands—based on claims that their children have luxury “in their DNA”—made more headlines than almost any Costner movie in the 21st century.
As Costner approaches 70, he seems unfazed by the bad reviews of “Horizon: An American Saga.” At least that’s what he’s said in the past suggests. “If you want to see a highlight of my life, that wasn’t a movie. It was that internal conversation I had with myself where I said: ”I don’t give a damn what other people say, this is what I want to do and I’m burning my ships like Cortes and I’m going where my heart wants. I’m not going to be swayed by trends and what’s popular.”
