French fashion house Dior returned to Scotland for the first fashion show in the north of the UK in almost seven decades.

Dior drew inspiration from Scotland’s history for the show in the gardens of Drummond Castle near Crieff, Perthshire, which was attended by celebrity fans including Jennifer Lawrence, Rosamund Pike and Anya Taylor-Joy, according to BBC.

The last time the French house held a show in Scotland was in 1955, when its founder Christian Dior held two shows, one at the Gleneagles Hotel in Otterarder and one at the Central Hotel in Glasgow.

The launch of the Cruise 2025 collection took place on Monday afternoon at the ‘Scottish Versailles’, which was used as the setting for the French palace gardens in the TV series ‘Outlander’.

Dior creative director Maria Grazia Curie was inspired by the location and, in a nod to the Auld Alliance between the Scots and the French, opened the show with checkered clothes and closed with a piper parade.

Photographs from Christian Dior’s 1955 show at Gleneagles were printed on some of the clothes, with the designers describing them as “a kind of film montage”.

Models dressed in lace, black velvet and violet plaid, dresses with Scottish map gaiters and creations in a palette of yellow, purple and green conjured up a dreamy world of Scottish romance with touches of punk twists on the catwalk amidst the enchanting scenery of historic Drummond Castle.

“I visited Scotland many years ago before I got into fashion and found it so beautiful, I came back with the specific idea of doing a show here, it’s a very cinematic place,” said the Italian fashion designer. “At the same time, I was fascinated by the influence of Christian Dior. He toured Scotland and was impressed by the kilt, but his interpretation was more French… In a way the Bar jacket and skirt is his interpretation of the kilt.” explained.

Maria Grazia Curie worked with fabric makers in Scotland, including Harris Tweed and Johnstons of Elgin, and designers.

“For the last 10 years we’ve only been talking about the brand in terms of fashion, but I want to show what’s behind the brand – the factories, the knowledge,” said the director of the creative house backstage before the show. “Everything is not made in Paris or Milan, it is a global industry. So when we talk about fashion, we forget how connected we are. Collaboration is an opportunity to explore different ways of doing things” he reported.
