The musician and founding member of Pink Floyd, Roger Watersit is hoped that the free now Julian Assange he will one day be able to resume his work at WikiLeaks if he wishes and declares himself ready to help fund his website.

The songwriter, who has long called for the Australian activist’s release from a British prison, told Reuters he had exchanged messages of “relief” with Assange’s wife Stella since he arrived in Canberra last week. In fact, Waters had visited Assange in prison last year.

Assange arrived in Australia after pleading guilty to violating the US Espionage Act as part of a deal that would see him freed after a 14-year legal battle.

As Waters said, Assange is currently “somewhere in secret” with his family. “If he could (return to WikiLeaks) and if he has it in his heart and if it’s what he wants to do, I’m sure he has the numbers…to do it. That remains to be seen”the artist said in an interview.

Asked if Assange is up to it, Waters replied: “You’ll have to ask Julian…but I hope so. I wish. But most of all, I hope… he sees his boys now growing up and they can talk to their father.”

Stella Assange has stated that it is too early to say what her husband’s next step will be and that he needs time to recover and “get used to freedom”.

Assange himself has not spoken publicly since his release. Asked whether he would fund WikiLeaks, which Assange founded in 2006, Waters replied: “Of course. I mean, I can’t fully fund it. My pool is limited…I want whistleblowers all over the world to be encouraged to go to them.”
