Authentic, honest and enjoyable
Of the few such honest and non-set up artists o George Margaritis he is truly a delight in all of his – few – television appearances.
Like the one he did yesterday on his show Grigoris Arnautoglou with the presenter not having such an easy time but to his credit he puts in the episode the epic moment when the popular singer brought his past to the surface.
“As for me, George, honestly this George Margaritis, whom we have known for 35 years, I have loved this George. George the layman, the authentic one who is also taken from the square”Grigoris Arnautoglou initially told him so that Giorgos Margaritis answered him:
“And today, do you know what I see in front of me? A 17-year-old Gregory! It’s as if you haven’t changed at all.”
“Oh, Iorgara, be well. Thank you very much, man, honestly,” replied the host of the late night for the “catrapakia”:
Giorgos Margaritis: And the girl! What was the name of the girl you were with then?
Grigoris Arnautoglou: Then, for whom… Rania?
GM: Rania.
GA: Rania, of course!
GM: Yes, that was also a child.
GA: Of course, she was too. We are the same age as Rania, may she be well.
GM: You see her, greetings! Hello Rania! You were little children then.
“I don’t see her because he is now a politician. For Rania Thraskia, we say, she is a politician, so let’s wish her good luck and a good political career. Leave the TV at least for now” Grigoris Arnautoglou finished the conversation
Giorgos Margaritis also talked about how he decided to quit smoking, when after the release of his album “The streets of nowhere”, he didn’t like his voice from the cigarette.
“I went to a doctor and he didn’t tell me anything important, he looked at me and said: George, haven’t you had enough of cigarettes? I say, because she told me now. I hadn’t been to any doctor about my throat, ever. I go out, I was at the Red Cross hospital, I take them as they were (including the cigarettes) and the lighter and throw them in the waste basket. That was the end, in 2002, the month of May”
While with disarming honesty he also spoke about his addiction to gambling and how he finally managed to escape:
“I cut gambling with a knife when Takis Soukas told me “we’ll make a record if you cut gambling, otherwise we won’t make it”. I shot him because the New Year was coming in 1981… I told him “tomorrow we have a new year, I have the right to play” and we threw a dice in Gyzi and that was it” said Giorgos Margaritis and continued:
“For 10 years, gambling made me everything I wanted. Until my mind went to put on kavages to have pocket money for the guineas. I could have been famous 10 years ago, I could feel it from the response of the people when I sang.”
While he also mentioned in very nice words both Stelios Kazantzidis and Stratos Dionysiou, as well as the young singers to whom, as he said, he owes a lot.
