Dedicated to the work of the French fashion designer, Coco Chanel (Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel), and her iconic style that continues to influence the way women dress today was brought to Shanghai.
The exhibition “Gabrielle Chanel Fashion Manifesto” at the Power Station of Art in Shanghai presents his legacy in fashion, perfumery and jewelry.
Visitors can view the collection drawn from the Patrimonies de CHANEL, the Palais Galliera and various international Museums and Institutions as well as from private collections curated creations including rare archival garments along with a selection of accessories, jewelery and fragrances. The exhibits are presented in chronological order, detailing Chanel’s early career and the launch of her first boutique in the 1910s, culminating in her final collection in 1971.
The French designer’s introduction of the little black dress transformed black from a color of mourning to a symbol of timeless elegance, fundamentally changing the way women were dressed and perceived in society, the exhibition description states.
A rare collection of Chanel jewelry inspired by Byzantine art demonstrates Coco Chanel’s ability to combine historical influences with contemporary 20th century elegance, using intricate patterns and luxurious materials.
Her influence also extended to the sphere of perfumery. In 1921, he commissioned perfumer Ernest Beaux to create a perfume that “smells like a woman” resulting in the creation of Chanel No. 5 with oriental notes. Chanel No. 5 quickly became synonymous with luxury and elegance, cementing its place as a cultural icon.
Power Station of Art (PSA) is the first state-owned Museum of Contemporary Art in mainland China. Located in a former power plant along the Huangpu River, it opened in 2012.
The exhibition that opened on July 12 and will run until November 24 is the first retrospective dedicated to Chanel’s work in China and highlights the birth and evolution of her style, the characteristics of her work, her codes and her contribution in the history of fashion.
