The announcement that Joe Biden, 81, has withdrawn from running for re-election in the United States has caused a stir on social media, as expected. Many celebrities in the country have expressed their opinions on the matter, especially those who support the Democratic Party.
“I see someone putting others before themselves and their pride today, and for that, I have enormous respect,” said Finneas, 26, musical partner of his sister, singer Billie Eilish, 22.
“We are truly living in unprecedented times,” Lizzo, 36, marveled as she reposted the story.
Barbra Streisand, 82, took the opportunity to thank the outgoing president. “Joe Biden will go down in history as a man who achieved significant accomplishments in his four-year term,” she said. “We should be grateful for his defense of our democracy.”
“Seinfeld” alum Julia Louis-Dreyfus, 63, also wanted to leave her gratitude on record. “Thank you, President Biden, for your service, your extraordinary leadership, and your love for this country and all its people,” she wrote.
Mark Hamill, who plays Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars saga, echoed the same sentiment. “Joe Biden has a record of accomplishment unmatched by any president in our lifetime,” he said. “He has restored honesty, dignity and integrity to the office after four years of lies, crimes, scandals and chaos. Thank you for your service, President. It is now our duty as patriotic Americans to elect the Democrat who will honor and continue his legacy.”
Comedian Kathy Griffin, 63, was more succinct. “Let’s make history!!! Finally!!!” she wrote.
Some were pleased that Biden announced he would support Kamala Harris, 59, his vice president, as a candidate in his place. This was the case for actress Jamie Lee Curtis, 65.
“I wholeheartedly support Joe Biden and his decision to step down and wholeheartedly support Kamala Harris,” Curtis said. “She is trusted and tested and is a fierce advocate for the rights of women and people of color, and her message is one of hope and unity for America at a time of great national division.”
Filmmaker Spike Lee, 67, highlighted the fact that Kamala is a black woman. “Once again a sister comes to the rescue,” he commented when posting an image of the vice president.
Mark Ruffalo, 56, known for his role in “The Avengers,” said it was “time to start taking action.” “No to Trump/Vance. No to the right-wing Christian religious takeover of our country. Nothing against Christianity; it just shouldn’t govern a nation born of religious freedom,” he said.
Actress and singer Cher, 78, posted shortly before the announcement that Biden would resign. When she heard the news, she returned to social media. “I hadn’t watched it on TV or spoken to anyone, so I didn’t know it had happened,” she said.
“I believe this is the only chance for the United States to remain a democracy,” he continued. “The Democratic Party must really think outside the box. ‘Winning is everything,’ but if you don’t win you can’t change anything and times must be changing.”
