Prince Harry says lawsuits against British media are ‘central part’ of family rift

Prince Harry said, according to excerpts released on Wednesday (24) from a new documentary, that his legal battles with the British tabloid press contributed to the breakdown of his relationship with the British royal family.

“It’s certainly a central piece to it,” Harry told ITV in the documentary “Tabloids on Trial”.

He is currently suing Rupert Murdoch’s UK newspaper arm, News Group Newspapers (NGN), and the publisher of the Daily Mail in two separate lawsuits, alleging illegal activities by journalists and private investigators over several years.

Harry has previously referred to the lawsuits as his “mission.” Both publishers deny the allegations and are fighting the lawsuits, which are being brought by Harry and others.

“I believe that from a service perspective and when you’re in a public role, these are the things we should be doing for the greater good, but I’m doing it for my reasons,” he told ITV.

“For me, the mission continues, but this has caused… part of a rupture,” he added.

Harry blames the British media for the death of his mother, Princess Diana, in a car crash in 1997. He has also accused British newspapers of racist and hostile attacks against his American wife Meghan Markle, which were cited as a factor in his decision to step down from royal duties and move to California in 2020.
