Mariah Carey, 55, suffered a major blow in her life last weekend. The singer lost her mother, Patricia, and her sister, Alison, on the same day. The cause of death has not been released.
“My heart is broken as I lost my mother this past weekend. Unfortunately, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life the same day,” the singer told TMZ. “I feel blessed to have been able to spend the last week with my mother before she passed away.”
In the message, Mariah thanked her fans for their love and asked for privacy. The singer has two shows scheduled in Brazil for September 20 and 22, the first in São Paulo and the second in Rio, as one of the main attractions of Rock in Rio. So far, the organizers of both shows have not announced any changes.
In her autobiography “The Meaning of Mariah Carey”, published in 2020, Mariah talks about her complicated relationship with her family. She describes her relationship with her mother as “a mixture of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, envy, admiration and disappointment”, but ends the book saying that she loves her mother and knows that she “did the best she could”.
The singer had an even more troubled relationship with her sister, Alison. Alison went through many financial difficulties. She was a prostitute, was even arrested because the activity is illegal in some US states, and publicly asked Mariah for help several times, without success.
The singer also has an older brother, Morgan, who sued her for defamation when the book was released.
