The famous model Elle Macpherson revealed she secretly battled breast cancer seven years ago but is now in remission after refusing chemotherapy.
The 60-year-old model reports in her upcoming memoir, titled “Life, Lessons, and Learning to Trust Yourself”that she took a holistic approach to her illness — going against the advice of 32 doctors and the wishes of her family.
Speaking to Women’s Weekly about her diagnosis, she revealed: “It was a shock, it was unexpected, it was confusing, it was scary in a lot of ways, and it really gave me an opportunity to find a solution that works for me.”
It was called “The Body” and it continues to hold its title deservedly. The famous model was born in Australia. “The first time I walked the catwalk I was about seven years old, with my mother’s sister, who was a model. I hated it. I never wanted to be a model, I wanted to go to law school and I wanted a job that I felt was reliable and stable and would have a steady income and something I could grow into.” she had stated in an interview.
After her diagnosis, the doctor told Elle Macpherson to undergo a mastectomy with radiation, chemotherapy, hormone therapy and proceed with breast reconstruction. However, Elle – who at the time was dating anti-vaccinationist Andrew Wakefield – decided against traditional medicine.
“People thought I was crazy”she pointed out, but she went ahead with a treatment plan she trusted. Elle Macpherson revealed that she rented a house in Phoenix, Arizona for eight months where she “holistically dealt” with her cancer under the guidance of her primary doctor, a naturopath, a holistic dentist, an osteopath, a chiropractor and two therapists.
Staying at home alone, the model said she spends her days focusing and dedicating every minute to healing herself.
Elle Macpherson was a young woman with an athletic body that was a far cry from the look that dominated the catwalks of the time. But everything changed thanks to “Sports Illustrated”. Starred in the magazine’s iconic swimwear feature up to five times! In fact, the Australasian was on the cover in 1986, 1987, 1988, 1994 and 2006, breaking a record that has yet to be surpassed. After her three consecutive front page appearances in the 1980s, Time magazine in 1989 published an extensive report on Macpherson, who also appeared on its cover. In fact, it was the famous American magazine that invented the nickname by which she became known all over the world: “The Body”.

Also in September 2023, Elle Macpherson surprised her fans on Instagram by posting a photo with an Alcoholics Anonymous badge announcing that she had been sober for 20 years. “I stopped drinking in 2003 because I felt like I couldn’t be fully present in my life and that’s how I got to know myself better. This was a decision I have never regretted.”she said.
Macpherson had two children with Frenchman Arpad Busson. Due to their parents’ work, the two children grew up between New York, London and the Bahamas. And they also spent a lot of time behind the scenes of fashion shows. Maybe that’s why Cy, the younger of the two, got into fashion. By the age of 20, he had already appeared in various fashion magazines (including “Glamour”, “Inside” and “Elle” magazine, where he appeared with his mother), booked advertising campaigns and signed a contract with a modeling agency. Even so, for both her sons, the important thing is their studies.
