After a long two-year hiatus, Emily Cooper, played by Lily Collins in the Netflix series, Emily in Paris is finally back on our screens. In a few days we will see the second part of season 4 on Netflix, and we can safely say that the new season is filled with love triangles, chic Parisian fashion and, of course, French beauty.

But after four seasons, Emily’s beauty has finally struck a perfect balance between American and French aesthetics, lead makeup artist Aurélie Payen said in an interview.

“It was important not to recreate the looks I had done in seasons one, two and three, and to develop Emily’s character, especially with how her personal life has evolved,” Payen tells Overseas Bazaar.

It’s clear that Emily is not the same character we saw in season one, and her makeup proves it. “When Emily arrived in Paris, she was very American, but I wanted to convey her years in Paris with some true French beauty looks,” explains Payen. “This season, we went for either bold makeup or no makeup at all. It’s very “French” to go on a date or shopping without makeup. It shows a sign of confidence.”

In this new season, expect to see a lot of makeup-free moments in Emily’s everyday life, but also more bold, colorful looks as well. Payen played with exciting shades for Emily’s evening looks and party scenes. “We used more colors this season,” he says. “From black-brown lips, to graphic eyeliner on the waterline of the lower lid, which was my favorite look.”

To create an intense look, she used an eyeshadow palette to outline the lips and a burgundy-brown lipstick. Some looks seamlessly combined both American and French aesthetics, such as Emily’s green smokey eyes with red lips. The vibes they give us are very ’80s.

With the first five episodes out, we only have a small taste of the many beauty looks we’ll see before season four wraps up, and Payen says to expect a lot more combined beauty looks.
