The findings certify that this is a position that had autonomy in raw materials and a permanent character of installation
For a rare high-altitude Neolithic installation, “which differs from what we know so far from similar installations in the plains”, the Ministry of Culture says about the Neolithic site “Botanical Garden”, on the western shores of Lake Plastira, the third excavation period of which was recently completed
This position “must be treated as a special case that opens up new fields in Neolithic research”, says the relevant announcement.
Rare finds of the Neolithic settlement in light
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in this position it has been identified, in altitude 800 m., Neolithic settlement. At a depth of about 1 m below the surface, the main use surface of the space was identified which according to radio chronologies goes back to the transition from the end of the Archaic / beginning of the Middle Neolithic (5999-5845 BC-OxA 18194).
The findings confirm that this is a site that had autonomy in raw materials, such as clay for the manufacture of vessels and flint of various varieties, while an abundance of grinding tools and many millstones made of sandstone found in the natural background of the site were found.
The pottery is generally monochrome, made in situ, since two ceramic kiln complexes have been discovered so far, where spherical main vessels are embedded, apparently in their firing position. It is estimated, according to the stratigraphy, that other furnaces will be found later. The presence of ceramic kilns in such an early period is very recent information from three other sites in Thessaly.
The fact that they were spotted here demonstrates the autonomy of this mountainous location and possibly also the more permanent nature of the installation. “Proprietary constructions” for various uses have also been found, possibly an oven. A large area is covered by reddened embankments limited by the presence of a brick wall, where hearths, stake holes and other movable finds have been found, the same announcement adds.
Among the movable finds from all over the area, some anthropomorphic figurines can be distinguished, one of which has the rare surviving height of 10.5 cm, while the whole is estimated to have exceeded 16-17 cm in height. An intact furnace or house effigy also stands out, also a very rare find. Some decorative elements (knobs) can be found in the pottery which can possibly lead to closer relationships with specific positions-cheeks of the same period in the Thessalian plain.
