Important milestones for the restoration of the Kasta mound monument have now been completed, and in the best possible way as part of the first phase of the works being carried out. This was emphasized, among others, by the Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni, in her statements after the autopsy she carried out on the mound, accompanied by officials, officials of the YPPO and the deputy governor of Serron Panagiotis Spyropoulos.

Mrs. Mendoni expressed her complete satisfaction with the progress of the works being carried out inside the mound, underlining that, barring any unforeseen circumstances, the goal is to make the monument fully accessible and open to the public by the end of 2027.

The minister pointed out that the nature of the monument is such that many of the restoration and maintenance works carried out are completely invisible, citing as an example the very important dome restoration projectabove the sphinxes at the entrance to the monument. “The restoration,” he noted emphatically, “was done with standard methods. Suffice it to say that three and a half thousand elixirs were fully applied (metal links) to restore the dome and with nothing visible.”

Answering, and understanding as he said, all those who ask for the acceleration of the work for its quick delivery, he reminded that the complete restoration of the monument was redesigned in 2019 and 2020, while in June 2021 there was also a significant disaster due to the intense rainfall that hit the area.

“On this monument,” added Ms. Mendoni, “it is necessary to carry out a series of invisible works that will help in its correct and complete restoration. These works will continue in the next phase. I am very satisfied with the development and progress of the works. I realize that everyone, especially the local community, wants faster times in the execution of the works so that the monument can be delivered and can be visited. But the reality is how the monuments are what point us our intervention times based on their requirements”.

The Minister of Culture also made a small reference to the organization – spatial planning that the entire monument will have with the shaping of the surrounding area and the necessary aesthetic restoration when the work is completed in 2027 and it opens to the public. He added, however, that if until 2027 the work allows the monument to be visited intermittently by small groups of visitors, this will be done by the local Ephorate of Antiquities of Serres.

Lina Mendoni concluded that all this time maintenance work has been carried out on the outside of the monument by the competent services of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while there are special machines that constantly monitor the behavior of the monument. What should also be emphasized is that at the entrance to the monument a canopy-shell was placed, according to the study approved by KAS, which ensures better-safer access, but also protection inside the mound.

Their absolute satisfaction from the progress of the work that exists inside the monument, the deputy governor of Serron Panagiotis Spyropoulos also expressed. Mr. Spyropoulos emphasized that the Region of Central Macedonia continues to actively support the restoration and maintenance of the Kasta mound, pointing out that it is one of the most important in Macedonia.
