This Friday, September 27th, the day of Cosmas and Damião is celebrated in African-based religions and in Brazilian popular syncretism.

The twin saints, in popular tradition, represent and protect children. For this reason, famous adherents of this faith, such as Regina Casé and Zeca Pagodinho, usually distribute bags of sweets in the neighborhood.

Zeca celebrated the date early with a table full of sweets, toast with guaraná, blue and pink candles and the family together. The singer wore a shirt with green stripes and stars in reference to the traditional package of sweets that is distributed on the day.

On social media, Regina Casé was “caught” by friends distributing sweets at Projac. “I’m an old-timer, my bag has a soft top, a girl’s breasts”, said the actress.

Other artists such as Preta Gil, Liniker, Diogo Nogueira, Carlinhos Brown and Maria Bethânia made posts on social media celebrating the date. Preta asked her followers where in Rio de Janeiro to eat a good caruru, a dish made with okra that is eaten on this date, especially in Bahia. The singer also informed her followers that she will deliver sweets on Saturday (28).

Liniker posted an illustration of the Ibejis, Cosme and Damião’s Candomblé correspondents, also represented by two twin children. Diogo Nogueira posted a “point”, a song in honor of the entities, as well as a video by historian Luiz Antônio Simas, a scholar of syncretism and popular traditions. Carlinhos Brown and Maria Bethânia also celebrated on social media with points and images of the Ibejis.
