Batman became the first superhero to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

In a separate star ceremony Thursday, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce honored Batman, “one of the world’s most iconic characters, who stands for justice, strength and bravery,” with a star.

“For more than 85 years, Batman has appeared to fans in comics, cartoons, television, movies, toys and video games. Batman has literally been everywhere, and now we’re so proud that he’s the first superhero to rightfully land here to receive his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame,” said Steve Nissen, president and CEO of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce.

Batman’s star is the 2,790th alongside that of the actor who first played him on TV, Adam West, and his co-creator, Bob Kane.

Fans of the superhero gathered at the ceremony, some wearing Batman costumes and others clutching comic books and memorabilia, hoping to get autographs from West’s co-star in the first TV series, Burt Ward, who played Robin.

Batman is the 20th fictional character to receive a star on the Walk of Fame. Only 20 of the total 2,780 stars represent 0.01 percent, EW reports, noting that the award was truly historic.

It took 18 years for the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to award the first star to a fictional character, Mickey Mouse. The other 18 stars have been awarded to TV families, cartoon pets and live-action characters so memorable they have outlived the actors who portray them.

Batman was created for DC Comics by Bob Kane and written by Bill Finger and first appeared in “Detective Comics #27” in 1939. Since then the “Dark Knight” has remained a symbol of determination, courage and justice.
