The Copan building, which caught fire this Thursday (3), has among its 32 floors famous residents such as actor Paulo Vieira, fashion designer Walério Araújo and filmmaker Jean-Claude Bernardet. Singer Manu Gavassi also owns a property there, currently rented.

On social media, Paulo Vieira and Walério Araújo reassured fans. Neither of them were in the building at the time of the fire. The actor and global presenter is in Rio and the fashion designer in Jaraguá do Sul (RS).

“The fire is in my block,” wrote Vieira on Bluesky. “It looks like it was in an apartment below mine. It’s okay, I’m in Rio, my family has already come down and everyone is fine. I hope no one was hurt.”

Walério used Instagram to let his fans know that he is also safe. “I arrived in the South today. I’m fine, updating the news with my neighbor,” he wrote. Filmmaker and film critic Jean-Claude Bernardet told close friends that he is fine and has returned to his apartment. Manu Gavassi was contacted by the report, but has not yet responded.

FIRE

The Fire Department was called to the building around 4pm and sent nine teams to the scene. There is no information on injuries. According to Lieutenant Olívia Perrone, from the Fire Department, the cause of the fire is not yet known, but the fire, which has already been controlled, reached the 22nd floor. “It was probably in something in the structure of the building,” he told Sheet.

All apartments and stores were evacuated, but as of 5:15 pm, residents were already returning to their homes.

Opened in 1966, the Copan building is one of the most famous works by architect Oscar Niemeyer and was designed at a time of expansion and appreciation of the center of the capital of São Paulo. Today, around 5,000 residents live in the condominium, which has approximately 1,200 apartments.
