Christopher Ciccone, younger brother of singer Madonna, 66, died on Friday (4), aged 63. The artist, designer and decorator was dealing with cancer.
According to a representative told the American press this Sunday (6), he passed away “peacefully” and was surrounded by loved ones, including his husband, Ray Thacker. On social media, the queen of pop spoke publicly about the loss.
“[Christopher] was the closest human being to me for many years, it’s hard to explain our bond,” he wrote. “We took each other’s hands and danced through the madness of our childhood. In fact, dancing was a kind of superglue that held us together.”
“He was a painter, poet and visionary,” he continued. “I admired him. He had impeccable taste. And a sharp tongue, which he sometimes used against me, but I always forgave him. We soared to the highest heights together.”
Madonna also recalled that the two spent some time without speaking because of arguments, but that they made up when he became ill. “I did my best to keep him alive as long as possible,” he commented. “He was in so much pain at the end… Once again, we held hands. We closed our eyes and danced. Together. I’m glad he’s not in pain anymore. There will never be anyone like him.
I know he’s dancing somewhere.”
In addition to Madonna and Thacker, Christopher is survived by his father, Silvio Ciccone, and his brothers Martin, Paula, Melanie, Jannifer and Mario. His death occurred a few weeks after that of their stepmother, Joan Gustafson Ciccone, who also had aggressive cancer and passed away on the 24th, aged 81.
Last year, Madonna’s older brother, Anthony, died of respiratory failure and throat cancer. He was 66 years old.
Madonna’s mother, Madonna Louise Ciccone, died in 1963 of breast cancer. This occurred shortly after Christopher was born.
The brother had a close relationship with the queen of pop at the beginning of her career, in the 1980s. He worked with her on several occasions, as a dancer, costume designer and designer for the singer’s shows.
It was Christopher who directed the art direction of the “Blonde Ambition” era shows. On “The Girlie Show”, he was the tour director.
The relationship, however, was shaken when the brother released the autobiography “Life with My Sister Madonna” in 2008. After a reconciliation, things turned sour again when Christopher gave an interview to the US Sun tabloid in 2017.
