‘Now I can make any decision’, says Bill Gates’ ex-wife about supporting Kamala Harris

by

Since May, when she announced that she was stepping down as co-president of one of the largest private charitable foundations in the world, Melinda Gates, ex-wife of Bill Gates, has thrown herself into politics and opened her stance on issues such as abortion.

According to the New York Times, marriage to Gates made Melinda, 60, afraid of provoking negative reactions from governments around the world. That’s why their attitudes and positions were more polite. But now that has changed.

She supported political candidates and donated more than US$13 million (equivalent to more than R$70 million) to groups supporting the presidential campaign of Kamala Harris, with whom she negotiated a joint event and publicly defended abortion rights, an issue that she downplayed it for decades.

“Now I can make whatever decision I want to make about endorsing or not endorsing on my own,” she told the newspaper. While downplaying the role of divorce in her change of stance, she said “there were more considerations because I was the head of a foundation.”

Showing increasing interest, Melinda hired a former Biden political advisor to help her with donations. She was also influenced by two of her children, who asked her to support the Democrats in the current election.

It is worth noting that two years ago, Melina had never made large political donations. And there were more than ten of them after this period of separation.

Melinda and Bill Gates announced the end of their marriage in 2021, after 27 years of marriage, but promised to continue their philanthropic work together.
