As part of the Memorandum of Cooperation signed in September 2021 by the European Center for Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Monuments with the Ministry of Culture of Albania, with the aim of preserving the frescoes, the marble members and the floor of the Byzantine church of Agios Nikolaos in Mesopotamos, the space was held 27 August until 20 September 2024 the first phase of the maintenance works.

According to the Greek Ministry of Culture, an interesting element was the fact that the investigation work revealed mural decoration on a fairly large area, especially in the western and southern parts of the temple, which until now was not visible.

The maintenance work on the frescoes is planned to continue in the year 2025.

During the first phase, exploratory cuts were made on all the surfaces of the temple up to the level of 8 meters, extensive operations to remove the later plasters and plasters, as well as demarcation, fixing and surface desalination works.

All the above works were carried out in accordance with the conservation study of the frescoes and decorative elements of the temple, which was prepared on behalf of the EKBMM by the Directorate of Conservation of Ancient and Modern Monuments of the Ministry of Culture and approved by the Ministry of Culture of Albania.

At all stages of the organization and planning of the project, our cooperation with the Institute of Monuments of Albania was excellent.
