In the new series of radio documentaries on European history, the historical scholar Vassilis Panagiotopoulos is a guest on Aris Portosalte’s show to describe the assessment of the Liberation Struggle of the Greeks and the formation of the new Greek state.

In the broadcast of Sunday, October 6, Mr. Panagiotopoulos and Aris Portosalte, following the first part of the documentary, began their discussion by referring to the national nature of the revolution which demanded the establishment of a national state. The intentions of the Greeks with the revolution were not to harm the European establishment but to end their enslavement by the Ottoman empire.

Then they talked about the outbreak of the revolution of 1821 mentioning some of the great personalities of the struggle. At that time Europe was a conservative force as a whole without being a place of great ideological ferment. In addition, Mr. Panagiotopoulos and Aris Portosalte referred to the establishment and purpose of the Philic Society as well as the Philanthropic Society of Vienna founded by Ioannis Kapodistrias with Alexandros Ypsilantis as vice president. In the second part of the show, they analyzed the point of view and the role of the Ecumenical Patriarchate as well as who was driving the revolution, closing the discussion with the political evolution of Greece after Kapodistrias in the 19th century.
