by

Although Fernanda Montenegro doesn’t like to be called that, she is, indeed, a diva. An icon of Brazilian dramaturgy, as his contribution goes far beyond memorable interpretations. As the protagonist of classic and contemporary works, she raised the standard of acting, inspiring new generations of actors with her dedication and talent.

But the artist, who celebrates turning 95 this Wednesday (16), is also remembered for her striking phrases and strong opinions regarding politics, sex, society, old age, television and death. The actress has established herself over the decades as a thinker who uses her art and voice to incite debate and further solidify her role as one of the most respected figures in Brazilian culture.

He has stated, for example, that he thinks about death every day. “I wonder a lot how it (death) will come, in what way, where I will be on the day it comes.” He has also criticized young people who believe that there is no sex in old age. “But when they reach that age, they will see that it is different. Those who think like that will see when they get older that this thought can be summed up in one word: prejudice.”

And what can we say about the “sincere” style when reporting her experience after being nominated for the 1999 Oscar with the classic “Central do Brasil”. “I never thought I would do this business.”

Fernanda Montenegro’s importance is also reflected in her presence off-screen. She is a fervent defender of culture and theater in Brazil, encouraging dialogue between different art forms. And, as Fernanda herself would say: “Meanwhile here [aponta para a cabeça] If it’s working and I have some chance of expressing myself, it’s impossible to stop.” The public is grateful.
