‘Sertanejo is the music of Brazilian fascism’, says Pedro Cardoso

Actor Pedro Cardoso, 61, criticized the country rhythm, stating that he does not consider that there are real artists at the forefront of the segment and that the music would be ‘from Brazilian fascism’.

In an interview with Rádio Bandeirantes, the interpreter of Agostinho from “A Grande Família” (Globo) was controversial. “I don’t know if there is any real artist there. But, in my opinion, it’s a completely monotonous theme with very little inspiration. It’s no surprise that this is the music of Brazilian fascism. It’s an empty song, of theoretical interest, on a subject None. It’s a song about nothing, about being a cuckold or not being a cuckold”, he said.

According to the actor, it is unfair to call the segment country music, since, in his opinion, only older songs, such as “No Rancho Fundo”, would deserve this nomination.

“And now there’s a problem of ‘being a cuckold and not being a cuckold’, of ‘my girlfriend left me and I left my girlfriend’. The only issue they have is a question of masculinity and female fidelity,” he stated.

Cardoso also called the singers “Brazilian agricultural traders very attached to American culture”, and added that they follow paths that money makes for art.

Some country singers spoke out against the statements. “His comment is as useless as the role he played,” said singer Rio Negro, from the duo with Solimões.

“These pseudo-intellectuals always have a deep analysis. Tell us, great Augustine, what music can we listen to? What clothes can we wear? What can we talk about?”, said Hugo Pena.
