The Central Archaeological Council (KAS) unanimously gave its opinion in favor of the study for the temporary removal and the methodology of repositioning the ancient remains that were discovered inside its shell Venizelos station in the Thessaloniki metro, during the second phase of the excavation.
According to an announcement by the Ministry of Culture, the opinion was made in accordance with the joint proposal of the competent departments of the Ministry of Culture and Sports (DIPKA, DVMA, DAAM, DAVMM) and the consent of the Ephorate of Antiquities of the City of Thessaloniki. The council’s unanimous opinion last week on the removal and reinstatement of the underlying antiquities discovered during the investigation, which took place after the temporary removal of the overlying antiquities, took place.
Specifically, according to the same announcement, the KAS gave a positive opinion in favor of the study for the temporary posting and the methodology of relocation of the revealed architectural remains related to a network of infrastructure under the decks of the two main roads – Decumanus Maximus and Cardo at Venizelou – as well as in a dense structure with successive phases of the first construction island SE of the intersection of the road axes. The antiquities during their return to the shell of Venizelos Station, will be included in the monumental ensemble to be relocated. The use of a crane bridge, designed by the designers, especially for the Venizelos station, will facilitate the removal and mainly relocation of the antiquities. The overall study of the emergence of the overlying antiquities, includes the planning for the relocation, fixing and by area promotion of the underlying antiquities.

The antiquities of Venizelos station are temporarily detached and relocated to the same location. The detachment and relocation ensure the preservation of the testimony of the urban organization of the city, the overlap of the building phases of its urban fabric, but also the highlighting of its history and great longevity. At the same time, they ensure the didactic projection and report of the chronological phases, which otherwise could not be researched, studied, exposed. In 2023, the people of Thessaloniki will have a state-of-the-art metro with stations, which will show the live connection of their city with its past “.
The Secretary General of Culture, George Didaskalou, made the following statement: “With the new unanimous opinion of the KAS, it is confirmed that the removal and relocation of the antiquities revealed after the end of the excavation, ensures both the promotion of the monument and the construction of the Venizelos metro station.” .
