“My fans know how important Quincy was to my music” – Their first meeting
The death of legendary music producer and songwriter Quincy Jones at the age of 91 was announced yesterday and a host of music artists with messages wove his eulogy.
Among them is the superstar Weeknd, who paid tribute to his late “idol” with a long and emotional post on social media.
The Canadian singer shared the foreword he wrote for Quincy Jones’ 2022 autobiography, titled “12 Notes on Life and Creativity.”
“My fans know how important Quincy was to my music. I was given the opportunity to write a foreword to his book and I tried to capture what he meant to me as a person. Let’s honor his life today,” he said.
The Weeknd hailed Quincy Jones as his “idol” and “the reason he’s in music.”

Referring to Jones as ‘Q’ he emphasizes:
“Q was my idol in every sense of the word and I tried to soak up any ideas of greatness he may have left behind. I felt like I knew him, because I basically knew everything about him and his work, but we hadn’t met in person yet.
In 2015, when Victor Drai surprised me by bringing Q to my concert at Drai’s Nightclub in Las Vegas. I almost lost my mind after hearing that my idol was sitting on the side of the stage getting ready to watch me. I was so focused on meeting him (the reason I’m in music in the first place) that I barely noticed that there were fans on the other side of the stage, screaming my name, trying to get my attention.
The first thing Q said to me when I approached him was, “Go to your fans.” Take pictures and sign autographs. I’ll still be here waiting for you afterwards. It’s more important.” Of all the lessons I learned from watching his public interviews or listening to his productions for hours, this one piece of teaching proved to be the most meaningful. He was teaching me something in that moment that I will never forget. Nothing is more valuable than the people around me and giving back is always better than receiving,” the Weeknd emphasized.
Toward the end of the prologue, the Weeknd notes, “Well Q, thank you. Thank you for everything you taught me in public and everything you taught me with your words and actions.”
