The Beatles won nominations for Grammy for the first time since 1997. The legendary band earned two nominations, for their latest song ‘Now and Then’ in the Record of the Year category and in the Best Rock Performance category.

This year’s nominations for “Now and Then” are the first for the Beatles since the late ’90s, when they won three Grammys in 1997.

Described by former band member Paul McCartney as “the last of the Beatles”, the song was written by the late John Lennon, who died in 1980, and features original vocals recorded by Lennon in 1970 and completed using Artificial Intelligence.

“Now and Then” features the sound of new instruments by Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, the only two surviving Beatles, as well as guitar recordings from the 90s by the late George Harrison, who died in 2001.

“Now and Then” was written and sung by John Lennon, who recorded the song as a demo at his home in New York in 1978. The first recording contained only John Lennon’s voice and piano.

In 1994, 14 years after his murder, his wife Yoko Ono gave the demo to Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, along with demos of ‘Free as a Bird’ and ‘Real Love’.

Working with Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) producer and mastermind Jeff Lynne, the three Beatles recorded new parts to create a cover of ‘Now and Then’, but due to technological limitations they were unable to separate John Lennon’s vocals from the piano of the original demo.

Paul McCartney and Ringo Star after working with director Peter Jackson on the documentary ‘Get Back’ are back at it with ‘Now and Then’.

Jackson and his team isolated Lennon’s vocals in the original demo with the help of Artificial Intelligence.

The Beatles are not the only representatives of rock of that era included in this year’s list of Grammy nominees. The Rolling Stones have earned a Best Rock Album nomination for 2023’s ‘Hackney Diamonds’.
