The documentary ‘Beatles ’64’ captures John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr arriving at Kennedy Airport on February 7, 1964
New interviews with Sir Ringo Starr and Sir Paul McCartneyin which they recall what it was like to land in the US at its height Beatlemania are featured in a new documentary about the legendary British rock band.
The documentary “Beatles ’64” records the band from Liverpool – John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr arriving at New York’s Kennedy Airport on 7 February 1964.
Produced by Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese, the film will feature previously unseen footage of the band and capture the camaraderie of the Fab Four.
A black-and-white Disney+ teaser shows the band members on a bus chatting in heavy Liverpool accents, as well as joking and smoking and not being sure which city they’re in during their US tour.
Sir Paul McCartney recalls that their trip to America took place shortly after the assassination of President John F. Born in Dallas, Texas in 1963.
The former band member says: “Maybe America needed something like the Beatles to lift them out of their grief.”
Sir Ringo Starr is shown interviewing Scorsese.
As the director laughs, Sir Ringo says: “It was like saying ‘we’re in America, in America!'”
At one point after showing videos of girls screaming and passing out, he also says: “I think madness was happening in the world and in the band we were kind of normal and the rest of the world was crazy. Everyone went into hysteria when the Beatles came to town.”
The film is directed by David Tedeschi with executive producers Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, as well as George Harrison’s widow Olivia and John Lennon’s son Sean.
“From the moment they landed at Kennedy Airport and were met by thousands of fans, Beatlemania swept New York and the entire country,” Disney+ says of the documentary. “Their thrilling debut on ‘The Ed Sullivan Show’ captivated more than 73 million viewers, the most-watched television show of its time,” he adds.
