‘I had difficulty coming to terms’, says Gilberto Gil about his son’s death at 19

Gilberto Gil, 82, ended the 2024 season of Conversa com Bial (Globo). In the interview, which will air on December 13th, the musician spoke about the death of his son Pedro, in 1990.

Pedro Gil was Gil’s eldest son with his second wife, Sandra Gadelha, and was also a musician. He died at age 19 in a car accident. Asked by Bial if this was the loss he suffered most, Gil confirmed that it was.

“I had difficulty coming to terms with the reversal of factors. He was 19 years old and it was an accident, it was very sudden”, recalled the singer. “I was tempted by nonconformity. To this day I don’t conform, but we have to conform.”

Still in the interview, Gil spoke about his increasingly tender relationship with his children and grandchildren and announced his Tempo Rei tour, the final one of his career, which starts in March.

On the program, Pedro Bial avoided asking about Preta, who is undergoing cancer treatment. The musician, however, spoke at length about his relationship with his children, grandchildren and great-granddaughter. He stated that he is closer to his family, who always accompanies him on tours and trips around the world.

On the road, in fact, the Gil family’s favorite cuisine is Italian, according to the patriarch. “There’s no mistake about Italian food, practically anywhere in the world it manages to keep its characteristics preserved.”
