“Harry Potter” actor Rupert Grint, 36, was ordered to pay £1.8 million after losing a legal dispute with UK tax authorities, according to the newspaper British The Guardian.
Grint, who played Ron Weasley in JK Rowling’s film franchise, was informed that he had to pay the amount in 2019, when HMRC, the British department responsible for collecting taxes, questioned his tax returns.
The agency said Grint misdeclared £4.5 million in residual income from the films — money from DVD sales, TV syndication, streaming rights and other sources.
This amount was declared as a capital asset rather than regular income, which is subject to a much higher tax rate.
Grint’s lawyers appealed, but after years of wrangling, the ruling against the actor came down this week. Judge Harriet Morgan said the money “derived substantially all of its value from Mr. Grint’s activities” and “is taxable as income.”
Grint starred in all eight “Harry Potter” films between 2001 and 2011 as Ron, the young wizard’s best friend, and is estimated to have earned around £24 million from the role.
This is not the first time that the actor’s tax affairs have been the subject of lawsuits. He had previously lost a separate court battle over a £1m tax refund in 2019.
The actor was approached by the British newspaper to comment on the case, but had not commented until the publication of this report.
