Treasure Dam: The largest cobblestone dam in Greece and the Balkans

by

In mountainous of Dramawhere nature has the ability to offer the visitor the most authentic images of a strongly virgin character, human intervention, perhaps for one of its few times, has managed to coexist hormonally with it and impress with the result which has created.

Starting from Paranesti and heading northwest, following the opposite course of the flow of the river Nestos, in one of the most convenient road accesses, the visitor will encounter two unique dams, where each of them holds a first.

The first of the two, the so-called “Platanovrisi Dam” is the first rolled concrete dam for the construction of which the fly ash of the Ptolemaida thermal power plants was used as a basic material, thus achieving great economic benefits to PPC and significant environmental benefits to the natural landscape of the area, while this pioneering construction artificial lake created a quantity of water of the order of 90,000,000 cubic meters.

About 7.5 km in a straight line (12 km) northwest, the second damthat of Treasuresteals the show with its own first, being the largest rock-cut dam in the Balkans and one of the tallest dams in Europe.

It is a 175-meter-high earthen dam with an impenetrable clay core, which started operating in 1997. The old-mature Nestos valley, in which the river has been “boxed” and has opened a new deeper and steeper valley, was the most suitable solution for the construction of the dam. The artificial lake that was created penetrates into these valleys of the river, upstream of the dam, up to the Greek-Bulgarian border, holding a quantity of water of the order of 700,000,000 cubic meters. The depth of the lake reaches 147 meters in the basin of the dam and has an area of 16 square kilometers.

In the basin of the dam and at an altitude of 310 to 330 meters, is located the water tower through which the water is led to the basement of the Thesaurus HPP and exits to the escape canal in the Nestos riverbed, downstream of it, at an altitude of 220 meters, ending at the dam of Platanovrisi.

These two dams complement each other, where in addition to the possibility of reusing the water released by the Treasure Dam, there is also the possibility of pumping water from the artificial lake of Platanovrisi. This of course results in a paradoxical phenomenon, where the surface temperature of the lake of Platanovrisi at seasons of the year (Summer) has the coldest temperatures (6.7 ° C), since the inflows are made from an intermediate depth of the upstream reservoir of Thesaurus and the outflows also from an intermediate depth from Platanovrisi.

This condition may gradually affect microclimate of lakeside zone in the delta plain, however, a new construction and operation downstream of Platanovrisi is expected to alleviate these problems.

Whatever happens, the result of the construction of these two dams, is in itself a wonderful spectacle which is framed by the magic of nature. And as the palette of the seasons differentiates these colors, the impressive images that are captured in the gaze of the visitor, if nothing else, remain truly unforgettable.
