The former Hollywood producer has leukemia and other comorbidities. According to the American website TMZ, Weinstein’s lawyers accuse the Rikers Island municipal prison in New York of medical negligence.
“Harvey Weinstein, who has been suffering from a lack of adequate medical treatment and facing inhumane conditions at Rikers Island, has been transferred to Bellevue Hospital for emergency treatment,” the former mogul’s lawyers said. “He must remain hospitalized until his condition improves.”
A spokesperson for the former filmmaker said: “Weinstein, who suffers from numerous illnesses, including leukemia, is being deprived of the medical care that a person in his condition deserves, incarcerated or not,” he said.
The producer is serving a 16-year sentence for rape, forced oral sex and forced penetrative sex. He is still awaiting trial for other similar crimes.
Former owner of Paramount, one of Hollywood’s largest film producers, Weinstein was at the center of a sex scandal that led to the Me Too movement in 2017. He was accused of sexual violence by more than 80 women.
TMZ states that it contacted the public department responsible for the correctional center, but received no response.
