This small “magical village”, with its bright and warm igloos, has nothing to envy from Santa Claus’ hometown, the small town of Rovaniemi
The big one outdoor fireplace in the Acropolis of Serres it burns incessantly, devouring the large dry logs one by one. They will warm up there Santa’s reindeerwhen he will arrive in Serres to rest from his long journey. The preparations for the Christmas season began very early, with the lighting of the tree on December 4 signaling that everything will be ready to welcome the beloved saint of children, as well as adults.
The elves they set to work to prepare his house, the post office, the gift workshop, the cookie house and many other small and large structures. Thousands of lights illuminated the eerie night, with the 18-meter “Tower of Orestes” also standing as a bright guard of the Christmas state in the ancient and Byzantine Acropolis of Serres, which is built on Koula hill, the highest point of the city visible from every house, but also every apartment in Serres. This small “magical village”, with its bright, warm igloos, as well as places for rest and entertainment for all guests, has nothing to envy from St. Basil’s hometown, the small town of Rovaniemi in Finnish Lapland.
The initiator of the village of St. Basil is the owner of the municipal refreshment center in Koulas, Charalambos Tsiliakoudis. “The Christmas village on the Acropolis of Serres took on “flesh and bones” for the first time in 2013. The Koula hill, in addition to the municipal lighting, had to be bright these festive days to attract Santa Claus to come to Serres as well”, explains himself, speaking to APE-MPE. “In the first years old wooden houses of the municipality were used which were thrown away and rotting in the abandoned camps. With the permission of the municipality, we took them, maintained them and started to give them shape. With the passing of the years and the attraction of more and more children, all the constructions were done from scratch,” says Mr. Tsiliakoudis, who defied the high cost and made his dream come true.
The Christmas village in the Acropolis of Serres is accessible free of charge for all its visitors, young and old. In the afternoons, elementary school students, under the guidance of an experienced chef, prepare their own chocolate cookies in the pastry workshop, while participating in many elf activities. On the other hand, the “fairy tales” … bring the magical world of fairy tales to life for all the Lilliputian visitors of the Christmas village. More than 100,000 lights flash their lights throughout the holidays, while the decorated wishing tree shows all the destinations that Santa Claus will follow from Serres all over the world.
“The purpose of all these activities is for young and old to experience beautiful moments. This, after all, is the greatest gift of Santa Claus, who is alive in everyone’s heart”, concludes Mr. Tsiliakoudis, who even wears the reindeer costume himself in order to participate interactively in all the events.
