A wide meeting for the protection of the Cyclades cultural reserve was held yesterday, Thursday, February 6, under the Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoni, due to the seismic activity recorded in Santorini.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Culture, at the beginning of the phenomenon, the competent Ephorate of Cyclades Antiquities, applying the fixed guidelines for seismic activity, has taken all the necessary precautionary measures to protect the island’s cultural heritage.

In particular, at the Museum of Prehistoric Thira and the Archaeological Museum the exhibits have been rearranged on lower shelves, and protective materials have been installed to ensure their safety in the event of further intensity of the phenomenon. Particular care was given to the exhibits kept in glass showcases, the big vessels and the sculptures, which were properly protected to limit a potential danger. In the archaeological site of Akrotiri, workshops and warehouses are neat and protected, according to security requirements. Similar measures have been taken for the other islands, in which seismic activity is noticeable.

Yesterday morning, the Ministry of Culture, under the Secretary General of Culture, George Teachkalou, carried out an autopsy on the archaeological sites and museums of Santorini, in the context of continuous controls due to the ongoing seismic activity in the area. It was found that both exhibits and infrastructure on the island have not at present have been damaged or damaged. At the same time, staff remain on a constant alert to safeguard the island’s cultural heritage and immediate reaction to any future seismic activity.
