Priority of the projects according to the Ministry of Culture is the treatment of rocky rock
Projects for the protection and promotion, as well as the safety of visitors to the Acrocorinth Castle, are being carried out by the Ministry of Culture through the competent Ephorate of Antiquities of Corinth, on the basis of programmatic cultural development contracts, between the Ministry of Culture and the Peloponnese Region. Priority, as the Ministry of Culture announces, is the treatment of rocky rock.
At the same time, they are proceeding with the work of restoring the Ottoman mosque I, the study of the restoration of parts of the outer wall of the castle and its lighting study. The Acrocorinth Castle dominates the homonymous hill in the immediate environment of ancient Corinth and has been a timeless refuge for the locals in times of raids. Impressive walls have been raised in the upper parts of the hill. Its vulnerable western part has been reinforced with a ditch and three fortification lines with equal number of gates. The current form of fortification is the result of successive building phases. The earliest established building phase was placed in Archaic times, when Corinth ruled by the tyrant Kypselos and its offspring (657-583 BC). Large-scale interventions and extensions were carried out during the Byzantine and Ottoman periods, as well as during the Second Venetian occupation (1687-1715).
Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni said: “The protection of the Acrocorinth Castle and securing a safe browsing for visitors are a priority of the project performed by the Ministry of Culture, in close and constructive cooperation with the Peloponnese Region, for the promotion of the Peloponnese, to promote the Peloponnese Region. complex. The fastening interventions concern the treatment of the rocky problem presented in a rock section adjacent to the entrance of the Castle (Gate A). The project includes work -based work, completion of browsing routes, specialized treatment and highlighting of the Castle’s individual areas and monuments, such as the Ottoman mosque, and the creation of a digital browsing. At the same time, studies are being carried out to fasten the walls, but also on their lighting. Our goal is, through a program of overall castle management, to ensure the protection and safety of the monument and its visitors, coupled with the highlight of its different historical phases and at the same time allowing it to be displayed during the evening hours. “
According to the same announcement, due to the rocking, near the entrance and for public security reasons, the Ephorate of Antiquities of Corinth amended access to the First Gate, with the formation of a temporary alternative route. The project of mounting the rocky slopes takes into account the results of the geological-geological preliminary design applied. The walls, totaling 3,000 meters, encompasses an area of 240,000 square meters, in large part of which a settlement was developed with a multitude of monuments.
Completion of the maturation of the study and maintenance study of the most worn out signs of the walls and their consequent restoration task, coupled with the task of the fastening of rocky slopes, will allow the re -use of the cobbled path to the first gate of the castle. which was banned in 2023 due to the fall of rocks and stones by the wall.
The Ottoman mosquito A, within the third enclosure of the castle walls, is one of the few buildings of the castle, which are preserved in a fairly good condition. It is a building of the 1st Ottoman period (1458-1687), with at least one phase of remodeling, followed by the usual a simple architectural type of mosque with a prayer room (Mihrab), Revak and Minaret. The aim of the Ministry of Culture is to restore and integrate it into the Network of Castle’s visiting monuments and to convert it into a place of cultural events.
