A flight from Air France with 375 passengers and 12 crew members turned around and returned to Orly airport in Paris, where he had taken off two hours earlier. The reason was the disappearance of a cell phone.
The AF750 flight was destined for the French colony of Guadeloupe, in the Caribbean. The trip would last eight hours in total. The plane had already reached the altitude of cruise when a passenger reported having lost the phone.
The crew and all passengers engaged in looking for their cell phone, but were unsuccessful.
Concerned about the risk of overheating and explosion of lithium -ion batteries, present in virtually every smartphone, the crew decided that it would be best to go back. If the phone came into contact with a hot surface on the plane, there was a risk of fire.
The Boeing 777-300er landed safely in Orly and the passengers were evacuated. With the plane empty, the onboard team found the lost cell phone and reembarked the travelers. They arrived safely to the Caribbean island about four hours after the original forecast.
Last month, a Brazilian suffered first and second degrees burns after his cell phone explodes in his pocket. The explosion was captured by security cameras of a supermarket.
