by

The legendary band ABBA was honored today with the Swedish Music Export Award for their contribution to Swedish music in 2021, as they reunited and released their first album after 40 years to the surprise and excitement of their fans.

The band – which includes Bjorn Ulvius, Benny Anderson, Anieta Feltsgog and Annie-Fried Lingstad – topped the charts last year with their new album.

“This year marks 50 years in which ABBA sold over 400 million records,” the Swedish government said in a statement. “What Anieta, Bjorn, Benny and Annie-Fried started in 1972 was the first big step in the history of Swedish music’s worldwide success. Thank you for the music! ”

The Swedish government notes that ABBA’s latest album, “Voyage”, which topped the charts in 18 countries, was the best-seller of the year in Germany and reached the highest position the band has ever held in the United States. “Voyage” was the fastest-selling album in Britain since the turn of the century.

ABBA gained international acclaim after winning the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest with the song “Waterloo”. With hits such as “Money, Money, Money” and “Dancing Queen”, they became a global music phenomenon before splitting in the early 1980s, when the marriages of the two couples who founded the band broke up.

Despite the rumors, it took four decades for the band to reunite, with the new album emerging from the venture of an innovative ABBA concert – entitled “Voyage” – which includes digital representations of the band’s four members , which were created thanks to motion-capture technology.

The Music Export Award has been given to artists who have achieved international success since 1997, helping to export Swedish music and creating a positive image of Sweden over the past year, according to the Swedish government.
