William Morris was a pioneer designer, writer, social activist and ecologist, who introduced a new and immediately recognizable visual aesthetic in the British interiors. He pioneered a new approach to design and construction, defending crafts in a period of British history where industrial mass production was at its peak.
Born in Walthamstou in East London And he studied at the University of Oxford, where he developed a passion for the past.
After the university, Morris started apprenticeship with neo -gothic architect George Edmund Street, which he abandoned. With the encouragement of artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882), he was involved in painting. Morris helped Rossetti and Burn – Jones in painting the frescoes at the University of Oxford.
In April 1861, Morris founded Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co., with six partners. After initially successful, the company saw a serious decline in profits due to an economic downturn in the late 1860s. As Morris worked hard in the 1870s to develop a more diverse range of products that would be addressed on a broader clientele, the company began to improve. Handmade fabrics and integrated interior design designs were sold to wealthy customers, while a series of cheaper products were manufactured for less wealthy, such as embroidery and simple furniture, such as the Sussex chair, based on a traditional country plan. With Morris head, the company passed into his hands and renamed Morris & Co.
Beyond the design sector, William Morris had a major impact on British cultural life, was a leading figure in the early socialist movement, influenced ideas for social reform, the protection of cultural heritage and the environment and what it means to live a full life.
The “Morris Mania” exhibition was inaugurated on April 5 and will run until September 21, 2025.
